Colchicine  has long been used for easing gout attacks. Yes, colchicine is in a sense advantageous; however there are also negative features of it. First of all, it cannot be said that this remedy is, in fact, a cure. It is not meant to reduce the amount of uric acid in the blood.  Colchicine only relieves the unbearable pain that patients feel.

People respond in different ways upon having taken this drug. Some may acquire negative side effects while others experience nothing at all. Common side effects that might occur are abdominal pains, diarrhea, muscle weakening, vomiting, nausea, headache, rashes, and hair loss. When taken in high doses, it can in fact be fatally toxic

There are also instances that colchicine can cause unfavorable effects when taken together with some other medicines. Some types of antibiotics like Marcolide hold back the breakdown of colchicine in the liver, thereby resulting in the rise of colchicine concentration level in the blood.

Another is its combination with cyclosporine. Their mixture can cause an intensified muscle tissue complications. Before taking colchicine treatment, make sure that you have notified your attending physician if you are currently taking some medicines for your other illness. Making a decision on your own could worsen the side effects of this drug.

Colchicine should also never be taken with grapefruit juice, or eaten with grapefruit.
